The intention of the project WEIGHT OF THE WORLD is to represent the effect of pollution on eggshells. Pollution is making eggshells thinner and more vulnerable to the pressure of the outside world. As an example: The eggs of birds, such as the peregrine falcon, are becoming so thin that parents are crushing their eggs when they try to brood them.
“The story of eggshell thinning is one of the most comprehensive environmental investigations in the short history of environmental toxicology.” — David B. Peakall, DDE-induced eggshell thinning: an environmental detective story, Environmental Reviews, Vol. 1, No. 1 (1993), pp. 13-20.
